Apple will replace iPhone batteries at a discounted price regardless of battery health

Apple has clarified that it will replace the batteries of older iPhones at a discounted price even if they are not defective. The company has reduced the pricing of battery replacements from $79 to $29 last week following the controversial throttling of iPhones reports.

The discounted price is now live across the world including India where users can get battery replacements at Rs. 2,000 plus taxes. While the company last week announced a price cut for battery replacements but failed to specify the eligibility criteria for battery replacements, but today French tech blog iGeneration has reported that an internal Apple Store memo which is been circulated states that customer can proceed to replace the batteries on an iPhone 6 or later even if it is not defective.

The discounted price might be a move to mollify the anger of customers after the sudden throttling controversy. On a different note,
Anecdotal reports that customers who paid $79 for battery replacements before the price cut before December 30, will receive a refund from Apple upon request.

iPhone battery replacements in India and pretty much anywhere in the world is available until December 2018 and as for pricing in India, the price is now slashed from Rs 6500 to Rs 2000, plus taxes.

Google Pixel 2 XL: the Drama and the Truth

As you may have noticed, in the past period we focused more on Apple phones and iOS. However, it’s time to present you the new Google smartphones – Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL. This time we will focus on a bigger model – the Google Pixel XL 2.

Holding Google Pixel 2 XL in our hands, and playing with the world’s best camera was a magic moment. On the other side, Google Pixel 2 XL is quite expensive, and we are not sure that you should cash out that much. Do the specs justify the price? Let’s see.

GOOGLE PIXEL XL 2 DRAMA

Would it be a great phone if there wasn’t any drama involved? Definitely not. The show orbits around the new, POLED screen. Yes, POLED, you read it well. Actually, POLED STANDS FOR PLASTIC OLED and if you wish to find out more details about the new technology you can do it here. You will definitely be able to notice any plastic if you start staring at the screen for too long.

Honestly, we are not huge fans of the display. Yes, we know that this is 6-inch OLED display with 538 PPI and 18:9 ratio, but some things are missing. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that OLED usually has more of cool tone colors. Another thing is the OLED display is well-known for its deep black color. This means NO BRIGHT, VIVID COLORS AND NO GOOD CONTRAST, either.

And, let’s not talk about image burn-in. Oops – there is no such thing as the perfect smartphone. The whole story behind this is that if the image remains on the screen for a longer period of time, it burns-in a bit. We are not sure what the problem is, but hopefully, Google will solve the problem soon.

DESIGN IS ON POINT

This time, Google decided to go with METAL AND GLASS COMBINATION that gives the smartphone a dose of elegance and a glimpse of the future. The majority of the back is covered in aluminum, while the upper part is covered in glass, where you can spot camera lenses, flash, and sensors. The thing that we especially like is 3D, curved edges that make the Google Pixel 2 XL comfortable to hold. The dimensions are 157.9mm x 76.7mm x 7.9mm.

The fun part is the front-facing side of this smartphone. Not only that you can find dual speakers, but you can also see the front camera and LED, on top of the bezel.

What about home button? Google has decided to make it disappear and call it Active Sense. Active Sense is, basically, an invisible button that calls up Google Assistant.

Knowing that Google Pixel 2 XL’s tinier sibling has IP67, there is no surprise that this smartphone is water-resistant, as well.

THE ONE THING THAT THIS PHONE DOESN’T HAVE IS A HEADPHONE JACK. When we first saw the news, we thought Google was just playin’ us, but it’s true. Gotta keep up with the Apple design, we guess. Let’s not forget about USB type C, a standard slot for charging the phone.

SOFTWARE IS PURE MAGIC

Since this is Google we are talking about, there is no doubt that our favorite dessert, Android Oreo, works like a charm. We aren’t even going to mention the Google Assistant. Additionally, there are two significant features that we adore. The first one is the ALWAYS-ON SCREEN. You just need to tap on the screen once or place your fingerprint on the sensor of the back. The second thing is even better. Google Pixel 2 XL supports Project Treble, a feature that “talks” with hardware and decides on when to update the phone. Pretty cool, right?

HARDWARE RUNS LIKE USAIN BOLT ONCE DID

Snapdragon 835 chipset and 4GB of RAM. Pretty similar to Samsung Galaxy S8. Games, movies, YouTube video – whatever your heart desires. It is going to run like Usain Bolt!

Aldo BATTERY LIFE DIDN’T WOW US, we can live with a 3,520 mAh. Even if it sounds good enough, it just can’t make it through the day. Keep in mind that we can thank Android Oreo for longer battery life because it has so many features that prolong the duration of the battery life. The one thing that drains the life out of Google Pixel 2 XL is that you can double tap on the screen and it will automatically “turn on.” Let’s say this happens in your pocket, a few times a day. Also, if you want to know how you can test the battery life, check out a blog post on trustedreviews.com.

To be even more critical, we have to mention wireless charging, precisely, the lack of it. Google, please, step it up next time.

CAMERA IS THE STAR OF THE SHOW

We have only one word for the camera: JAW-DROPPING. Two cameras – 12.2 MP with f/1.8 lenses on the back and 8MP with f/2.4 lenses. In spite of the fact that other cameras have dual-lens options, Google Pixel 2 XL somehow managed to be the Number 1. How did Google do it?

To be honest, we don’t have an answer to that question. All we know is that the cAMERA PRODUCES ACCURATE COLORS, LIGHTING AND SATURATION ARE AMAZING AND FASTER AUTOFOCUS ALWAYS COME THROUGH. Portrait mode works good with both cameras, leaving you with a fantastic photo. Then, the video. Recording a 4K video at 30 frames per second seems like the most natural thing in the world. With bright colors, fast focus, you can become a pro at this.

Great job, Google!

WHAT SO UNIQUE ABOUT GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL?

Have you read the text?! JK, there is one thing that no other phone on the market has, and that is built-in eSIM technology. This means that you don’t need a SIM card to use it. All you have to do is download your credentials, and you are good to go.

GOOGLE PIXEL 2 OR GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL?

Let us ask you – what came first, the chicken or the egg? Asking us to choose between those two is mission impossible.

However, we can give you a piece of advice: If you are looking to by a phablet with an excellent camera, good performance with future updates for new Android versions, Google Pixel XL 2 is the one for you. Are you a gamer, or a photographer? Well, this is the smartphone for you. Enjoy new Google Pixel XL 2 and let us know how you like it!

New trends: Whole-display phones

This year was, undoubtedly, the year of whole-display phones. Samsung, LG, Apple and other tech moguls decided it’s time to give their users something they didn’t even think they wanted – EDGE-TO-EDGE SCREENS. Immediately, this novelty became a huge trend, and such smartphones are very desirable nowadays.

So, if you want something high-budget, and high-quality with fantastic design, we present you a few of smartphones that you will definitely like. Other phones can be added to this list, but we chose only the best. Enjoy, this is our top pick of the best whole-display phones.

GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL

Google Pixel 2 XL is a device that created so much drama around the display. You can find out more about it in our previous article. However, we are here to give you facts. This phone has a 6’’ POLED display with 18:9 aspect ratio and 538 PPI. Everything seems fine one the first look but POLED, a.k.a plastic OLED is what makes our heart skip a bit. And not in a right way! The word online is that this display has a burn-in if the screen remains on for an extended period. Even if this isn’t the truth, we don’t like POLED so much – there is just not right contrast or bright colors.

Besides a whole mess with POLED screen, GOOGLE PIXEL 2 IS A FANTASTIC PHONE. 3,520 mAh battery and Snapdragon 835 work great. The most prominent reason for buying this phone would be cameras – 12.2 MP with f/1.8 lenses on the back and 8MP with f/2.4 lenses. Currently, there is no better camera on the market. We can only say that there is no such thing as perfection, even in the world of smartphones.

IPHONE X

iPhone X is the phone that was launched as an homage to the 10th iPhone’s anniversary, and it wowed us all. iPhone 8 was released as well, but only this piece of beauty has a whole-display body. The design is very sleek, typical and iPhone-like, but THE DISPLAY IS SOMETHING ELSE – Super AMOLED 5.8-inch screen with a screen-to-body ratio of 82,9%.

The most significant change Apple made was replacing Touch ID with FaceID, a possibility to unlock the screen with your face, just by looking at the display. As always, Apple took an extra mile and took good care of the security making sure that FaceID works flawlessly.

If we haven’t convinced you that this, out of all whole-display phones, is the one for you, think about iOS 11 that runs like a charm and pretty impressive cameras of the 12MP rear and 7MP on the front.

LG G6

We are definitely rooting for this guy! Among all the significant names in the industries, LG found a way to be a part of the whole-display phones trend with LG G6. Although it has a screen-to-body ratio of 78,6% and is a bit smaller – 5.7-inch Quad HD+ IPS LCD display, we don’t mind. It has an aspect ratio of 18:9, just like the rest of the phones and gives that illusion of being in the cinema while laying on your couch.

The thing we love the most about LG G6 is the fact that IT HAS A PROTECTIVE LAYER ON BOTH SIDES – Gorilla Glass 5 on the back and Gorilla Glass 3 on the front. This doesn’t mean you can use it as a frisbee but is good to know that this boy can take a few punches. Did we mention it is water-resistant?

LG Q6

Yay, another LG phone! LG Q6 comes with the same display as the LG G6, but with a smaller screen of 5.5 inches. Its screen-to-body ratio is 78% with 18:9 aspect ratio.

LG Q6 runs on octa-core Snapdragon 836 and has 3GB RAM and 32GB of internal storage. If you are a fan of large displays go with LG Q6 – this one is not going to disappoint you.

SAMSUNG GALAXY S8 AND SAMSUNG GALAXY S8+

We are sure you expected Samsung on our list. Both of this phones have Super AMOLED Quad HD+ screen, but there are some differences:

– Samsung Galaxy S8 has screen-to-body ratio of 83,6% while his bigger relative has 84%,

– 5.8-inch display goes with S8 and 6.2’’ goes with Samsung Galaxy S8.

– Both of them come with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal memory, but Samsung Galaxy S8+ has an option for 6GB of RAM.

– Just like in the case of Samsung Galaxy Note 8, both of these whole-display phones run on Exynos 8895 which provides high-response and fast performance.

SAMSUNG GALAXY NOTE 8

This is a powerful device, to say at least. After the massive fiasco with Samsung Galaxy Note 7 and its exploding battery, Samsung made sure to amaze us this time. First, let’s start with the display. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 has Super AMOLED Quad HD+ 6.3 inch screen with a screen-to-body ratio of 83,2%. There are more words to describe display then there is in the name of the phone. 🙂

The screen has a minimal bezel on top and bottom part of the phone, but THE MOST IMPORTANT ADVANTAGE IS ITS INFINITYEDGE DESIGN, which makes the phone comfortable to hold. There are few more treats to this phone. Samsung Galaxy Note 8 runs on Exynos 8859 processor with not four, but eight cores. Oh, and did we mention 3,300 mAh battery? We must admit that hardware-wise, this is one of the whole-display phones that is unbeatable.

XIAOMI MI MIX 2

We are sure you haven’t heard much about Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, but you have to admit that Mi Mix is the cutest name for a smartphone you have ever heard. However, the name is only the beginning. The Mi Mix 2 comes with a 5.99-inch full HD+ IPS LCD display, a screen-to-body ratio of 80.8% and an aspect ratio of 18:9. If this doesn’t seem enough to you, just keep on reading. Hardware in this little guy is something you can find in the best phones in the market – Snapdragon 835 with eight cores, 6GB RAM and you can choose between 64GB, 128GB and 256GB of internal storage. There is even a limited edition of this smartphone that comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage! That is insane!

With such an outstanding performances, this is definitely one of the most attractive whole-display phones out there.

WHICH ONE WOULD YOU CHOOSE?

As we have mentioned in the beginning, all of the listed phones are high-end, and you are not just paying for whole-display phones, but for extraordinary design, fast performance and crazy equipment “under the hood.” So, it’s not just about the new trend, it’s about the quality, extraordinary performances, and excellent design, as well.

If Santa Claus could bring you one of these whole-display phones, which would it be? We wouldn’t mind getting all of them 🙂

2017 Recap: all the phones, apps and trends we loved this year

With the first day of New year, we know it’s time for one thing – 2017 recap that includes all the phones, apps and trends we enjoyed in the past year. As you will see, the brands really tried to gain our attention in 2017, while the small companies tried to find their place in the market with an out-of-the-box approach. Trends came along naturally, relying on the user’s preferences and desires. Here’s our take on 2017 recap.

BEST PHONES IN 2017

The year 2017 gave us some pretty impressive smartphones, and we will name just a few that are worth mentioning. Some of the best smartphones of 2017 are:

– SAMSUNG GALAXY S8 SERIES – Samsung Galaxy S8, Samsung Galaxy S8 Plus and Samsung Galaxy Note 8 is pretty cool phones. We will tell you right away – all of these smartphones are great, the only thing you should keep in mind is the price.

– GOOGLE PHONES: GOOGLE PIXEL 2 AND GOOGLE PIXEL 2 XL – Google Pixel 2 is just what you would expect – sleek design, Android that runs like a charm and good camera performance. There is no secret that Google Pixel 2 XL has the best camera on the market. In one of our previous articles, we covered a story about Google Pixel 2 XL. There has been some drama involved, so be sure to check out the article.

– IPHONE X – we wouldn’t miss mentioning the best Apple phone out there. iPhone X is an excellent smartphone that you can unlock with FaceID. This phone was created for iPhone’s 10th anniversary, and it was the surprise of the year. We shouldn’t forget to mention iPhone 8. If you want to know more about the differences between these two iPhones, be sure to check our article iPhone 8 vs. iPhone X.

APPS WE HAD TO HAVE

For our iPhone and Android users, we created a list of free apps that are supported by both of these systems. Let’s get to the 2017 recap, apps part!

– SLEEP CYCLE ALARM CLOCK (AndroidiOS) – If you can wake up in the mornings and started to hate your default alarm, try Sleep Cycle. This free app tracks your sleep thanks to your phone’s microphone and movement, thanks to the accelerometer and then wakes you up when you sleep phase is the lightest, near the time you need to wake up.

– DASHLANE (AndroidiOS) – Nowadays everyone has at least 10 passwords. Dashlane takes care of the security of your passwords. It encrypts and stores them in your device.

– VSCO (AndroidiOS) – VSCO is the best app for shooting, editing and sharing your photos. The most significant thing about the app is the fact it is detail-oriented – you can edit photos without it being so blatant and in-your-face. No wonder this is on our 2017 recap list!

– IFTTT (AndroidiOS) – short for “If This, Then That” is still a “must have.” Created for merging apps and making them work together. For example, if you wake up at 8 A.M., another app will schedule a meeting at 10 A.M. It works with speakers Google Home and Echo.

– PACER (Android, iOS) – if you want to count your steps daily and get an app that works well with other health apps, then Pacer is the app for you. It also has a social part – walking groups that can furtherly motivate you.

TRENDS THAT SHOWED US WHAT FUTURE LOOKS LIKE

There are far more trends we love this year, but we have chosen only five that impacted a mobile market the most.

1. SMALL BUSINESS TAKES THE LEAD – this is primarily a trend that has taken over the app market. When it comes to creating smartphones, we have to say that small businesses don’t stand a chance. But, the app market is entirely different. As you could see, there are a lot of little teams that give us some great apps that we just can’t live without.

2. LOCATION BASED SERVICES (LBS) – these services offers a real-time user data based on his/her area. This was the ultimate goal in the past few years, and now it’s finally achieved.

3. AUGMENTED REALITY (AR) APPS – in this whole 2017 recap, Augmented Reality is the real example of how far the humankind has come. Augmented Reality has taken over the app market and is going to be a huge trend in 2018. The great thing about these types of apps is that they are fun to play and engaging. From the user’s point of view, there is nothing more you can ask for.

4. ARTIFICAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) – while we are the tech stuff, we have to mention AI. Artificial Intelligence made its way into the app market but also in the mobile. For all the ladies out there, just imagine having a personal shopper, that knows what you would like to wear and suggesting you wardrobe pieces your assistant knows you would want. Furthermore, we already have an AI smartphone – Huawei Mate 10.

5. ANDROID INSTANT APPS – Instant Apps is a Google feature that makes apps run instantly – when they are needed. All you have to do is search for a specific app, and it will run.

2017 was pretty awesome! And we’re sure that this year will be equally great. So, dear 2018, welcome! We’re looking forward to seeing what you have for us.
